Effects on people...

Have you ever considered that animals aren't the only ones affected by global warming? Climate change in developing countries in particular, has had a huge impact on the lives of people...

Global warming is leading to a rapid increase in desertification, which is when furtile land is turned to desert. The places worst affected by desertification include the African countries just south of the Sahara desert (Sahel region). Desertification is having devastating effects on the people of these countries.

1. Desertification

The Sahel runs through a number of countries including Sudan, Chad, Mali and Niger

Results of Desertification for people

Desertification is resulting in many people being forced to leave their homes as a result of famine, drought or towns having been destroyed as a result of sandstorms. This migration means a growth in refugee camps. The people who have migrated are known as environmental refugees.

2. Rise in Flooding

Believe it or not, global warming is not only leading to desertification, but flooding as well. Rains are becoming heavier and more unpredictable in certain countries, and the floods are resulting in widespread destruction...

How does global warming result in Desertification and  flooding?

A rise in global temperatures causes more evaporation, which means clouds form faster and rain faster. This means clouds bearing rain do not travel far before it rains. Therefore, some places will receive more rain, which could result in flooding, and other places will receive less rain, which could result in drought.

Effects of flooding on people...

The floods that are resulting from global warming are forcing even more people out of their homes, meaning that more environmental refugees must look for somewhere else to live.
